Akarevuro

from $850.00

Limited Edition of 25 per size

Trekking to see the Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. My husband had endured two back surgeries prior to our trip, and although well enough to travel, he was unable to hike to the gorillas. Unbelievably, our guide arranged for six porters to carry him through the jungle on a bamboo bed complete with mattress, machete-ing our way through the triple canopy to meet our assigned Kwitonda group, named for the Silverback that originally established the group. Kwitonda died in 2012, leaving two young silverbacks to vie for leadership of the group. Akarevuro won the respect of the group members and took full leadership of the group. Akarevuro seemed disinterested in our presence as he chewed slowly on bamboo stalks, occasionally looking up from his feast to check his surroundings.
