These are no ordinary bubbles. These soft bubbles of the Plerogyra sinuosa coral hide a spiky center. During the day, these bubble coral look harmless enough, but at night their bubbles shrink and their spiky, stinging tentacles come out - searching the surrounding water for crustaceans and other prey. Similar to other corals, this species has a symbiotic relationship with zooanthellae, and algae living in the tissues that photosynthesize light and share the sugars with the coral. These corals will develop sweeping tentacles that search the area for encroaching competitive corals, stinging the edges of their neighbors until they shrivel and die, leaving more space around the bubbles for light. The little crinoid nesting along side of it better watch out!
