Conch Hide-A-Way

from $450.00

Limited Edition of 25 per size

As I child, I remember visiting gift shops in West Palm Beach with my grandmother and fawning over the beautiful conch shells for sale, with their glossy orange and pink interiors. “Put the shell to your ear and you can hear the ocean,” she would say. It wasn’t until I began diving that I really understood that these beautiful shells housed actual inhabitants, curious creatures with a large foot they use to shove off in the sand, resulting in quirky-jerky movements. But even more curious are their two-lensesd eyes at the end of stalks with a sensory tentacle used to feel objects. They cannot fully protract their eyes, leaving them vulnerable to attack and dismemberment. Alas! The conch has the ability to regrow their lost eyes - once amputated, it only takes about 14 days to regrow!
