Closely related to the octopus and the squid, the adorable cuttlefish comes in 120 distinct species. They are mysterious and beautiful and fun to watch underwater, and possess an unique ability to camouflage by imitating the color and texture of their environment. These beauties control camouflage by the direct action of their brain onto specialized skin cells called chromatophores, that act as biological color “pixels” on a soft skin display. The ability to change colors is exhibited from birth, therefore embedded in the brain and a relatively simple behavior to execute. This cuttlefish hovered under a a small sea fan of relatively similar color, so appeared blue as it attempted to hide from my camera.
