For five days we rose before dawn, driving 90 minutes to find Utah's wild Onaqui herd, timing our visits to golden hour when the horses gathered at watering holes. Standing among them for over ten hours a day, I witnessed their bonds up close — mothers nursing foals, stallions sparring, families moving as one.
Our guide spoke of the "gathers" — round-ups that would strip 14,000 wild horses of their freedom this year alone, as they'd already done to over 300 of this herd in 2021. Families torn apart, foals lost, animals shipped to holding pens, many never running wild again.
On our second-to-last evening, watching this diminished herd in the fading light, I thought of all they'd lost. As a pair of horses galloped toward the sunset, I shifted focus to the rim-lit grasses in front, letting the horses blur into motion behind them.
I call the image "Ghosts" — a tribute to the horses stolen from freedom, and a wish that their souls still run wild in that dusty desert light.
