Cape buffalo (African buffalo) are considered one of the iconic “Big Five” of Africa. The term was coined by big-game hunters who identified the five as the most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Cape buffalo live in large herds and have complex social structures. They are known for their aggressive behavior, particularly when provoked. We approached a small herd by a riverbed, where some males were tussling with their horns, like two brothers play fighting on a wrestling mat. They locked horns for several minutes, but appeared only to be be practicing for a greater battle. Post-tussle, this male stood alone quietly, relaxing in the afternoon sun.
