Off California’s central coast, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary has the nation’s largest kelp forests and one of North America’s largest underwater canyons. Known as the ‘Serengeti of the Sea,’ this marine environment is home to 34 species of marine mammals including humpback whales. On one whale watching excursion we were blessed with over 20 different humpback sightings, and many of the whales were lunge feeding. In this unique feeding method, the whales accelerate rapidly towards their prey (in this instance, it was a huge bait ball of anchovies) and open their mouth engulfing a large amount of water and fish, then filter the water through the baleen leaving only the fish! In this photo, I caught that whale as it was filtering and on its decent back into the water.
