The Coconut Octopus is a comically clever creature, with a bag of tricks that includes shape shifts, color camouflage, jet propulsion and ink ejection. However, these defenses are not always enough to escape from prey. The coconut octopus’s has evolved to be able to use clam shells, and (more recently discovered) much lighter coconut shells, to create body armor to both hide from predators as well as disguise itself from prey. It’s difficult not to laugh underwater when observing these incredibly intelligent critters. This octopus played hide-and-seek with us, hesitantly emerging from it’s armor while we patiently waited to take its photo, then literally “clamming up” when the strobes flashed.
This photo pairs well with “Exposed!”, where this octopus trusted us enough to give us a full view before moving on along the sand, carrying its shell on its back, realizing we meant no harm.
