Blue Spotted Ribbontail Rays are masters of disguise, burying themselves in the sandy sea floor, leaving only their eyes and their spiracles (breathing holes) visible to stay hidden from predators like sharks, and also to more easily ambush their prey. Quite shy, these rays are cautious around larger predators, including humans, and often flee rather than fight. This ray was quite patient with me as I hovered slightly above, taking photos of it’s beautiful blue spots and glowing golden eye, pebbles and sand cascading over the remainder of its body.
