White Pelicans weigh between 10 and 13 pounds and have the second greatest wingspan of any bird in North America (9 to 9 1/2 feet). While it is difficult to believe that these giants can soar with the grace of ballerinas, their flights often highly synchronized. At Snake Bite in the Everglades National Park, white pelicans spend the winter feeding and breeding along the mud flats. These birds are shyer then their brown counterparts and are spooked easily. As we cruised along quietly, this group took flight, their synchronized flight evident.
