At sunrise in the Mara, we spotted a lioness on the hunt. Nearby, a distressed topi called for her lost calf, its panicked bleats echoing from the bushes. As the lioness crept closer, we realized her sister had already captured the calf, holding it beneath her paw. We had missed the hunt by minutes. Bathed in golden light, the lioness’s face was framed in the quiet aftermath of the chase.
