It was our last day in the Mara, and we set out in the early morning dark, seeking a ubiquitous photo of a silhouette of a giraffe, a zebra, a gazelle in the orange glow of sunrise. As we neared the top of a hill, our guide noticed the pride of lions we had been watching over the last several days crossing in the distance. We sped across the grassland as three males, seven females and three cubs crested the hill with the sun beginning to rise behind them. One large male led the pride, occasionally stopping to check behind him for the rest of the family. It was a shot I had dreamed of capturing. I left my heart in Kenya on this morning, committing to return to retrieve it someday. In the meantime, I return to these moments when my heart was overflowing with joy.
