This lioness was the first I saw in the wild. We had been in the Chyulu Hills for two days when we finally received a radio communication from another vehicle that they had found this lone lioness in a tree. She had eaten recently and was full and uncomfortable as she tried to find a position to relax in on a large branch. Even as she struggled, she remained engaged with those of us quietly watching her, and in a moment of connection, she stared right at me as if asking for me to take her picture. I raised my camera, zoomed in, keeping my left eye open to maintain connection with her, and clicked. It was only later when I downloaded the photos did I see the small patch of saliva on her lip remaining from her afternoon feasting.
