While diving in the Philippines, I encountered a female titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) fiercely guarding her nest. These fish are known for their highly territorial behavior during nesting, often defending a zone above the eggs with sudden, aggressive charges. I was careful to stay outside the typical “trigger zone,” but she still rocketed upward to confront me. I managed to capture the moment her body blurred with motion while her face—complete with those unmistakable teeth—locked sharply into focus. It was a vivid display of maternal instinct and one of the most intense moments I’ve experienced underwater.
