This is the first crocodile fish I have ever photographed and I cannot wait to go back to the Indo-Pacific to find more of them! Like many species in the marine world, the crocodile fish can camouflage magically to blend into its environment, disguising itself from both predators and prey. But what is really amazing are it’s million dollar eyelashes! They have tasseled curtains that act as eyelids and are reactive to light, but the strobes don’t seem to bother them. This crocodile fish was laying in the sand beneath the reef, so its body was colorless like the sand, but the eye was “eye-catching” (pun intended) and the curtained lid fascinating. False eyelashes have nothing on these!
