Woodpecker in Flight

from $850.00

Limited Edition of 25 per size

In the Sonoran desert, the gila woodpeckers carve nesting holes in the flesh of old saguaro cacti. The cacti protects itself by secreting a sap that hardens into a shell, called the “saguaro boot.” This 100+ year old cactus was home to a nesting pair of woodpeckers and their young. The parents would spend hours during the day flying in and out of the nest, bringing berries, grubs and other tasty treats to the unseen young inside. After hours of watching the parents and learning their behavior, I was able to capture some photos of them in flight as they entered and exited the appropriately formed heart-shaped hole.
